Frequently Asked Questions

1. How does it work?

After completing a brief survey that helps us understand your skills and life experiences, we'll keep that information on file and contact you to arrange a month for you to be on-call. Depending on the roster that month, you may be primary or secondary on call. When your service month comes up, we'll call you if someone needs help.

2. Who can sign up?

Firefighters, their spouses, family members, and friends. Please tell your families about this program- if they'd like to help, we can use them!

3. Will I be the only person helping during my service month?

It depends on how many firefighters sign-up for that month, but our hope is that enough folks will be on call to make it a team effort.

4. What kind of help will i be giving?

It depends on your time, your skills, and what you're comfortable with. Most assistance consists of helping disabled or distressed members with household tasks such as:

Whether your firefighter brother or sister needs a ride, a meal, or a wheelchair ramp, we'll tailor your service to your individual skills and experience. We promise your experience will be rewarding and worthwhile- both for you and the member who needs your help.

5. Why do you need so much information from me?
Your life experience is very important to us. If you have faced personal or family difficulty in the past, and are willing to talk about it, you could be of tremendous help to someone facing the same situation. Perhaps you suffered emotional difficulty from serving in the military. Or maybe your child was born with a medical condition that required extensive treatment. Maybe you've faced divorce. Whatever your experience, it's valuable, and possibly helpful to someone else. You can be a mentor as well as a friend and helper.

6. What if I don't want to mentor? I just want to be available for physical jobs or tasks.
That's fine. Once again, we will tailor your service to your skills, experience, and comfort level. Be sure to indicate what kind of service you're comfortable with on the sign-up form.

7. What if nobody needs help during my month?
This does happen sometimes- what's important is that you made a commitment to be available, and that you sign-up again!

8. What if I can't make it because of work or other commitments?
We'll work with you to try to find a replacement.

9. Can I sign-up for more than one month?
Absolutely! We know many of our members enjoy being there for each other. We encourage you to sign-up as often as your time and energy permit.
