American Military University

College For America/SNHU

The importance of education cannot be overstated.  A two-year vocational degree in fire science lays a solid foundation for professional development as a firefighter. However, the need for formal academics at both the baccalaureate and graduate levels has never been greater for future leaders at both the company and organizational levels. As a result, your Relief Association has taken steps to make obtaining a college degree a reality, both in terms of flexible scheduling and affordability.

As we all know, a regularly irregular work schedule coupled with mandatory callbacks, finances, family demands and a host of other competing priorities relegates attending traditional school to the bottom of a long list. With these constraints in mind, your Relief Association has sought to lessen the hardships of obtaining an education. The SDFRA has partnered with two regionally accredited online universities, both of which provide an opportunity to pursue a college degree at an affordable price while continuing to juggle work and home life. Both programs are 100% online, with no on-campus visits.

American Military University (AMU) offers a "traditional" college experience, with regularly scheduled courses and collaboration with classmates, providing students with the feel and experience of college, albeit the program is completed online. AMU's degree offerings are extensive at both the baccalaureate and graduate levels and the discounted rate offered to SDFRA members applies to degrees in any subject.

Southern New Hampshire University (SNHU) on the other hand offers an innovative asynchronous approach, with no pre-scheduled courses. Students work towards their degree by demonstrating educational competency in required areas as assessed by mentor/instructors who are working professionals. SNHU’s competency-based learning program reflects a move by the US Department of Education to reward working adults who possess skills derived from work and/or life experience to "test-out" of courses in which they have demonstrated mastery. SNHU offers two baccalaureate degrees, business communications and non-technical healthcare management. A four year-degree from SNHU can be completed for roughly 10k, a tremendous value by any standard.
